MISSION STATEMENT:

The mission of the Idaho Catholic Register, official newspaper of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Boise, is to:

• UNIFY the far-flung Catholic Church of Idaho.
• INFORM Idaho Catholics about what is going on in the church locally, nationally, and worldwide.
• EDUCATE Idaho Catholics about the teachings of the church and provide information that will help them make decisions in accordance with Gospel teachings.
• INSPIRE Idaho Catholics in their faith.

The Idaho Catholic Register is the official newspaper of the Diocese of Boise. Bishop James J. Byrne founded the paper in 1958 as a way to unify a far-flung diocese that covers an entire state. He named the late Bishop Nicolas Walsh, who was then a priest of the Diocese of Boise, as the first editor.

In the beginning, the Idaho Register was part of the Register System, Denver, Colo, which published about two dozen diocesan newspapers from around the country. The Idaho Register became an independent newspaper published in Idaho in August 1973. It changed from a broadsheet paper to a tabloid size in June 1978. In December 1994 the paper's name was changed to Idaho Catholic Register.

The paper's circulation was about 6,000 in the beginning years. It was published weekly. A subscription price was $5 a year. Today, the paper goes out to over 15,000 Catholic homes across the state and nation twice a month at a yearly subscription price of $17. Along with parish and diocesan news, national and international church news, the Idaho Catholic Register regularly features Bishop Michael Driscoll's column, "Just a Thought...", the bishop's schedule, diocesan and Nazareth Retreat Center calendars, parish Mass schedules, a monthly youth page, two pages of news and columns in Spanish, letters to the editor, a religious education section, and news and features about Idaho Catholics and how they are living out their faith.
