MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

1. With the Principal, designs the academic program of the school ensuring program enhancement

using the most current research and best practices available to education; provides for the

teaching assignments of the teachers, requisitions instructional materials and equipment, and

assists in approving the master roster for the school.

3. Conducts, in conjunction with the Principal, the annual evaluation of department chairs.

4. Promotes the essential characteristics and fundamental values of a Catholic school. Advances a

spirit conducive to prayer and study across the school community.

5. Provides personal and visible leadership to all members of the learning community and seeks

continuous school improvement in a student-centric environment.

6. Works in an advisory and cooperative capacity with other members of the administration and the

school minister.

7. Directs, encourages, and supports the department chairs and media-library supervisor in

fulfillment of their duties.

8. Recommends to the Principal, after consultation with the school's Academic Council, policies on

grading, promotion, honors, and other academic matters.

9. Works with the academic departments on curriculum development and implementation.

10. Designs the academic program of the school ensuring program enhancement using the most current

research and best practices available to education; provides for the teaching assignments of the

teachers, requisitions instructional materials and equipment, and approves the master roster for

the school.

11. Conducts, in conjunction with the Principal, the bi-annual evaluation of department chairs.

12. Chairs the Academic Council.

13. Oversees, in conjunction with the Principal, the professional growth and development of faculty

members, and the in-service program designed to foster faculty professional growth and development.

14. Assists the Principal in the semi-annual visitation of all teachers.

15. Organizes and directs the orientation of new faculty and the implementation of the school's

induction program.

16. Provides for the assignment of substitute teachers and the preparation, completion, and

maintenance of faculty attendance records.

17. Evaluates and authorizes, in conjunction with the Principal and in consultation with the

department chair, requests for academic field trips.

18. Supervises the general academic program and maintains a dialogue with students, parents, and

faculty in regard to the academic program.

19. Develops the master schedule, supervises the use of faculty within the schedule, and organizes

student schedules in conjunction with the Principal and in consultation with department chairs.

20. Supervises the preparation, completion, and maintenance of student academic records and the

distribution of all academic progress reports.

21. Supervises the publication of the annual course description catalog and the revision of

academic information in all school publications.

22. Communicates with other schools regarding registration, scholastic records, and appropriate

placement for new or transferring students.

23. Develops and implements, in conjunction with the Principal, policies and procedures for the

admission and transfer of students.

24. Prepares that portion of the budget pertaining to the Office of Academic Affairs (Title II A)

25. Oversees, in conjunction with the Principal, the program for student retention in operation

throughout the school year.

26. Understand the need for involvement in conflict situations between teachers and students,

and/or parents, and assume the responsibility for acting, not only as a mediator in such instances,

by assuming, independently of the teacher, the role of making the final disposition of such

matters.

27. Assume responsibility for providing adequate supervision for on-site school activities

(athletic events, dances, etc.) as well as for such off-site activities and events as district and

state tournaments. Be visibly present at all such events and exercise a level and degree of

involvement that is appropriate.

28. Oversee the record-keeping procedures of the Assistant Principal and guarantee that all records

are maintained in a current, accurate and secure manner. Likewise, ensure that all record-keeping activities are assigned to classified personnel and safe from access by students or student aides.

29. Assumes responsibilities delegated by the Principal.

 

ADDITIONAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Staff evaluations, registration, commencement, and other committees as assigned.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

 

1. Must hold, or be capable of acquiring, an Administrator Certificate or a Standard Secondary

Teaching Certificate issued by the Idaho Department of Education.

2. Must possess the qualities of personality and character outlined in the Rationale section of

this position description.

3. Must have demonstrated the ability to work well with others, as well as have shown evidence of

sound management and organizational skills.

4. Must possess above-average skills in the use of oral and written language and have an

established reputation for accepting and implementing directives.

5. Because of the nature of the responsibilities of this office, it is essential that the

Assistant Principal for Student Affairs be adept at conflict resolution, be experienced in working

with adolescents, and possess a temperament not readily given to reaction.

 

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

 

Length of Employment: Employment as the Assistant Principal for Student Affairs at Bishop Kelly High School is structured on a 210-day basis – a period of ten months. Work commences two weeks prior to the opening of school and concludes two weeks after the close of the school year.

 

Daily Schedule: The workday of the Assistant Principal for Student Affairs begins at 7:30 a.m. and ends at 4:30 p.m. on Mondays through Fridays of each school day. Attendance at on-site school activities and selected off-site activities is considered a responsibility of this position.

 

Salary: The Assistant Principal for Academic Affairs will be compensated at a rate determined by the Board of Governance.

 

Benefits: As a full-time employee of Bishop Kelly High School, the Assistant Principal

for Student Affairs is provided a benefit package which includes paid tuition to any Catholic school in the valley, retirement, and insurance benefits.

 

Evaluation: Evaluation of the performance of the Assistant Principal for Academic Affairs will be the exclusive responsibility of the principal and will take place at least once yearly. The process will focus on the duties and responsibilities outlined in this position description.

 

Reports to: Principal of Bishop Kelly High School

 

Supervises: Certified and classified staff members as designated by the Principal of Bishop Kelly High School. Counseling and Library Staff.
