Job Title: Custodian and Maintenance

Primary Function:

Sacred Heart Catholic School is seeking a full time custodian and maintenance position. The custodian is responsible for fulfilling the mission of school by maintaining a neat, clean, safe, and orderly environment. The custodian reports directly to the principal. The custodian assists the principal, faculty, and staff by ensuring the school is well maintained for its educational purpose. The custodian is responsible for daily cleaning, building maintenance, and project management of the school. The primary duties are performed in a school building environment and include the use of electrically powered cleaning equipment and cleaning substances that may involve related hazards.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Clean classrooms, empty trash, vacuum carpets, sweep, and mop floors, dust and wipe off surfaces.
  • Clean and sanitize restroom areas, including toilets, sinks, mirrors, privacy dividers, walls, and floors.
  • Maintain supply levels in restrooms, including toilet paper, paper towels, and soap.
  • Wash walls, windows, and surface areas.
  • Empty and clean trash containers, including transporting bagged waste to outside trash receptacles.
  • Clean spills, spot clean or shampoo carpets, and remove graffiti as needed.
  • Operate, clean, and maintain custodial equipment.
  • Assist in moving and setting up furniture and equipment.
  • Help with snow removal duties such as sanding and salting walkways.
  • Help maintain the security of the school by locking and unlocking buildings.
  • Help maintain all systems and records (boiler, air conditioner filters in classrooms, swamp cooler,etc.).
  • Sets up for and breaks down after special events.
  • Deep clean the school during breaks including thoroughly cleaning offices and classrooms, stripping and waxing floors, and landscape maintenance.
  • Attends and actively participates in required training classes.
  • Performs all work duties and activities in accordance with Sacred Heart Catholic School policies, procedures, and safety practices.
  • Performs work associated with facility and grounds maintenance including construction, lawns and landscaping, sprinkler systems, driveways and parking lot maintenance.
  • Inspects, maintains, and repairs receptacles, structures, and signs.
  • May be required to work other than regularly scheduled work hours.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

Ability to:

  • Interact with students, staff, faculty, administration, and parents effectively and professionally.
  • Communicate effectively both orally and in writing (includes email and Google Drive)
  • Ability to work with little supervision.
  • Follow written and oral instructions.
  • Manage vendors and contractors effectively for project management.
  • Advise and actively participate in the maintenance committee.
  • Multi-task effectively and in a timely manner.
  • Meet deadlines.

Establish and maintain effective working relationships with school staff, students, and other personnel, as well as contractors, vendors, and others associated with job duties.

Education and Experience:

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • One year of cleaning experience is preferred.
  • Any equivalent combination of experience and training provides the knowledge and abilities necessary to perform the work.
  • Must be able to pass a background check.
  • The candidate must be able to adhere to the mission of Sacred Heart and to the teachings of the Catholic church.

Terms of Employment:

Length of Employment: This is a year-round position.

Daily Schedule: Daytime Monday through Friday approximately 40 HRS/ week. Overtime may be necessary.

Salary: $18-20/hour DOE.
