ATLANTA – The Idaho Catholic Register won seven awards in Georgia at the annual Catholic Media Association conference, June 18-21.
The competition attracted more than 1,300 entries from diocesan newspapers and major Catholic media outlets, such as Our Sunday Visitor, Alethia, the National Catholic Register (EWTN), the Tablet, Catholic News Agency and Maryknoll Magazine.
The ICR took first place for Best Feature Writing, Best Spanish Language Personality Profile, and Best Reporting of Social Justice Issues (Life and Human Dignity) in the biweekly newspaper category.
The Register was awarded second place for Best Spanish Language News Writing (National/International Event) and Best Photograph (Sacramental) and third place for Best Photograph (Feature Photo) and Best Spanish Language Essay Reflecting Faith Formation.
Deacon Scott Pearhill, ICR editor, called attention to the accolades for articles in both English and Spanish-language. “I’m proud of the ICR team. Our diocesan newspaper is truly bilingual and winning awards for feature stories in both languages.”
He expressed gratitude for all the Idaho Catholic schools and parishes that submitted stories and photos to the ICR throughout the year.
Verónica (Vero) Gutiérrez, ICR assistant editor, won several CMA awards for her Spanish-language reporting. She was particularly pleased to be recognized for her story about Father Gabriel Morales, for which she won first place in the Best Personality Profile category.
“It was gratifying to accompany a very dear friend in his recovery process, and to share his story of strength during a time of sickness. It was a testimony to the great miracle of healing that followed his winter car accident,” said Gutiérrez.
Emily Woodham, ICR staff writer, won first place in the social justice category for a series on Life and Human Dignity in which she collaborated with Deacon Gene Fadness and the late Dr. LaVonne Mills. “I’m proud of the hard work that went into writing the series, ‘Holy Death.’ Deacon Gene’s concept of writing about end-of-life issues within the teaching of the Church involved months of research, interviews and writing,” said Woodham, who took on the more personal stories of grief and hospice care.
“I’m grateful to Carolyn Yochum, Father Mariusz Majewski, Eileen Uhlenkott, Diane Rutherford and Mary Stewart for openly sharing their experiences in interviews for the arti-cles I wrote,” said Woodham.
Woodham also praised Dr. LaVonne Mills, who received the 2024 CMA award posthumously, noting that Mills tackled the tough questions concerning euthanasia, hospice and end-of-life decisions from a compassionate Catholic perspective that promotes human dignity in death and dying.
Deacon Pearhill congratulated ICR correspondents from around the state who provide local news and event coverage, like Julie Ferraro, Brad Bugger, Margaret Scott and Steven Green.
He added, “Jay Wonacott (director of the Diocese Marriage and Family Life Office), Lori Hadacek Chaplin, Mary Hersley-Kaineg and Deacon Gene Fadness (retired ICR editor) also deserve special mention for their excellent in-depth feature articles.”
Pearhill said, “None of this would be possible without Bishop Peter’s steadfast support and vision. Bishop Peter, our publisher, continues to believe that a high-quality printed newspaper is essential to diocesan communication, helping to inform, in-spire and teach the faithful in Idaho.”
