St. John Cathedral’s new Holy Spirit window unveiled, blessed by Bishop

Bishop Peter Christensen unveiled and blessed the new Holy Spirit window in the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist on Nov. 20, the Feast of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe.

The window, which is just part of an ongoing redesign and renovation of the Cathedral, more closely matches other windows in the Cathedral.

When the Cathedral was consecrated in 1921, there was no window in the center of an array of windows in the sanctuary. Instead, above the Tabernacle, which was then at the sanctuary’s center (and, as part of the recent restoration, has been moved from the south transept back to the center) was a rectangular piece of marble.

During a 1979 renovation, the first Holy Spirit window was installed to replace the marble. But in recent years, there has been a desire to design a window that more closely matches the windows of the four evangelists that surround the center window and other windows throughout the Cathedral.

The new window was designed and constructed by Wisconsin-based Conrad Schmitt Studios, which has been creating stained-glass windows for more than a century.

While they were in Boise, the designers noticed that two other windows, the St. Mark window, in the center array, and the St. Catherine of Siena window, in the northeast transept, also needed refurbishing.

The windows, Deacon Derrick O’Neill stated in a recent parish bulletin, “are like our Cathedral photo album: all around us is the story of our spiritual brothers and sisters, and the story of Christ.”

The congregation sang, “Come Holy Ghost, Creator Blest,” as the Bishop blessed the Holy Spirit window.

The Bishop also blessed a painting of the Holy Family donated by a parish family that will be installed in the Cathedral’s lower-level chapel.
