Speech and Debate Coach

ABOUT THE POSITION

We have an exciting opportunity for a Speech and Debate Coach for the 2024-2025 Speech and Debate tournament season (October through April). The role of Bishop Kelly’s Speech and Debate program is to help motivate students academically and to hone and practice reading, writing, speaking, and thinking skills. We teach students healthy, positive life skills in a fun, competitive, and positive environment. Applicants must be able to support these ideas while providing strong leadership and commitment to Bishop Kelly’s students. This is a stipend coaching position; however part-time classroom teaching could be considered, if the applicant is qualified and available. The Coach reports directly to the Vice Principal, and is responsible for all aspects of the speech and debate competition program.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Coordinate the Speech and Debate practice sessions in coordination with the Speech and Debate classroom.

• Instruct students: teaching critical thinking debate skills and higher level public speaking.

• Prepare rosters and communicate with Bishop Kelly faculty to monitor eligibility for participation in each tournament.

• Coordinate the BK Speech and Debate community to organize tournament needs: entries, transportation, judges, etc.

• Ensure the safety and security of the team before, during, and after tournaments.

• Communicate with the Vice Principal on progress/status/issues related to individuals/team.

• Represent Bishop Kelly at tournaments.

• Able to demonstrate a commitment to the student population served at Bishop Kelly.

• Strong technical knowledge of skills and strategies and the ability to teach these skills to students.

• Leadership and organization skills.

• Able to work independently and in partnership with others.

• Able to serve as a positive role model for students and a commitment to holding all students and adults associated with the program to the same standards.
